Hellenistic and Roman Pottery in pre-Roman Dacia (2nd c. B.C. - 1st c. A.D.)
The book of the Cluj based researcher Mariana Cristina Popescu is a monographic study dedicated to the Hellenistic and Roman vessels from the 2nd c. BC to the very beginning of the 2nd c. AD discovered in Geto-Dacian settlements on the territory of nowadays Romania. The main purpose of the study was the systematization of an important documentary source for Geto-Dacians Late Iron Age.
The rigorous database analysis of the study which comprises over 700 items from 24 Geto-Dacian settlements highlights classes of Hellenistic and Roman vessels used by Geto-Dacians, highlights the workshops and areas of origin, the contact areas with Hellenistic and Roman world as well as the way of penetration in the Geto-Dacians settlements. And not least it highlights the degree of connection and synchronisation of pre-Roman Dacia to the realities of contemporary ancient world.
Apart from particular data, important for the study of a sequence on Geto-Dacians Late Iron Age, the study brings an important contribution to the knowledge of the 2nd c. BC and the 1st c. AD Hellenistic and Roman production, both in regards to the productions who enjoyed more attention from specialists (e. g. Megarian bowls, West Slope and Hadra vessels, Eastern Sigillata B), and also in regards those whose research is at the early stage (e. g. Pontic Sigillata).
